The Fundamental Right Brain by a Neuro-anatomist

The following presentation link was sent to me today that I must share via this blog. In all our workshops we educate our attendees on the working of the left & right hemispheres of our brain. It’s fundamental that our attendees understand how their mind works as the foundation to moving them towards a higher consciousness. To find this presentation of a professional who studies the brain anatomy brings even more meaning to our work  - especially as her closing statement is aligned with our goals. Please take a moment to watch and hear her words as I am sure you will be moved as I was.
This is why our education is fundamental from a truly scientific point of view.  Here it is again http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/229

How the Bleep Do We Apply It ?

Posted by Lyndi in Branches of Thought on February 26th, 2008 |  Comments Off

How the Bleep do we apply it?

After  seeing the premiere of wtbdwk in a London cinema I  remember walking out feeling SO grateful someone had finally made a movie about all I had been researching. The world can now wake up to the extraordinary wisdom of quantum physics  and how this information can change our lives. Little did I know that most others, having only a limited familiarity with the science discussed in the movie, had no practical application of its teachings other than writing groovy words on glasses of water. Certainly the “I create my day - nobody else but me” rings daily in my ears however, do most know the power of this expression and how it truly does shape your life? IF you & I are searching to know more about ourselves the world and the universe, then What the Bleep  lends us a deepened understanding, beautifully illustrated in a story about human potential and the science behind it. The movie rocks!

From the feedback of those who shared this special viewing with me, and all those who received the DVD as a gift thereafter, I began to realize  there was so much information to absorb that most  people probably  left the theater with a  limited understanding of some key messages and how to apply their meaning in their daily lives.  . So, if we follow the movie’s theme that  “modern materialism indeed strips us of the need to take responsibility”,  and having some “understanding of Quantum Physics puts the responsibility back into our hands”,  then I propose a path that enables us to embrace the science, explain its confusing vernacular and then apply the powerful benefits it offers to our lives.
Let’s begin by remembering the wonderful story of the Shamanic people who were not able to see Columbus’ ships coming from the East but noticed the water patterns & waves changing on their ocean. Their eyes had never seen ships before so they couldn’t see them as naturally as we do. They could however see the subtle changes through the waves of the ocean (WOW!!). This powerful example is easily metaphoric of today in so many ways. Starting with the end in mind, an example could be “the great shift” that according to the Mayan prophecies “the end of the world” is scheduled for 2012. Can we see the “ripples in the water” now to forecast “this end of the world” approaching? Quite possibly! The internet enabled the world to know about the coming of the movie: What the Bleep, long before it arrived in our countries. So the internet showed the ripples in the water. The very understanding of the teachings in What the Bleep is perhaps a part of the Mayan prophecies and the world coming to an end may indeed translate to the world as we know it,  in current thought – be ending. A greater use of our minds our energy and our spirit may be the “new world”. Ponder that for a moment – if you haven’t already.

Will it yet again, be a time of “the once impossible” becoming possible and normal for all ? Once we believed the “earth is flat”. It was only  until we began exploring our environment, that belief changed. Our determined vision that “man can fly” has enabled man to take to the skies in flying metal tubes. We just expanded our thoughts, changed our mindset and look where it got us. We can also talk to our families scattered across the world through what began as our “type writers” and has now evolved into our laptops. Such acts like firewalking and manifestation are currently perceived now as “impossible” for most people. These skills are fast becoming more practiced by many different cultures and may some day soon be accepted as a part of normal life.  Change in our thoughts and essentially change in our beliefs, continues to change the world.

Our responsibility or rather our ablility to respond to the information shared in What the Bleep, is to ask bigger & better questions of life and of ourselves. Lets make better use of our thoughts and minds as individuals and collectively. Keep a keen eye on the “ocean” for the ripples of change – there are signs everywhere. Many may already see a shift to a greater level of consciousness within the masses. This shift may be perceived as a threat to the status quo , and thus employ fear tactics and brainwashing to dumb-down and keep the herd from thinking for themselves. An example of these fear tactics and mass mind control may be witnessed in the many ridiculous advertisements we see on television. Just how dumbed down a state of mind are the advertisers and marketeers leading their audiences into becoming? Television and media worldwide is full of “programs”, messages and commands that influence audiences’ thoughts and leads them into a trance like “sheep” state of being. Another example is the huge success of the digital gaming industry – it’s a brilliant form of mind control. The addictive nature of many digital games played by all ages keeps players from putting their brilliant minds to better use and thus takes control of their minds for the time they are focused on the game. The addictive nature of the games makes them profitable and clever until the players see the “silly-con” they’ve been led to believe. The essence of every computer and every computer game console is made with a sillicon chip – ironic or a superb clue… that broken down into syllables it’s a “silly–con”.  The more people are aware of these dumb-down “programs” and how their minds are being controlled, the more they can do something positive about it. Hence What the Bleep did not come out of Hollywood – it was aimed at those un-controlled enquiring minds eager to know more about ourselves our planet and our universe. It is slowly reaching and being understood by the masses due to its own growing popularity. We only have to reach a significant few to achieve the 100th monkey effect and the world will be an interesting place for all.

By knowing there is more to this reality we live in, and by watching What the Bleep, we can now ask bigger questions. We must question the raw elements of our environment. As a result we will engage more of our minds rather than accepting what we’re led (like sheep) to believe. Question our reality constantly, as there may well be a better one that we have yet to create. More awareness in our environments equates to putting more thought into every aspect of our lives including our working life. If you have yet to move into the working world then as a student you too can be asking more of your selves by questioning the method you are using to learn, study and inevitably - work. How do you use your brain, your mind and your thoughts?

Wouldn’t it be groovy, as a student of any age, to know that you are born genius? In fact we’re all born genius- it’s just how you use your brain that matters. Sadly most teachers don’t know this, so in our schooling we have been taught in a way that works for some but not for all. So we apply what we can and get by, finding ourselves in a working environment that is focused similarly to how we were taught at school.

How do we translate the “Physics of Possibilities” into our own worlds? What many didn’t realize is to exercise the “whole brain” is to be in “the field” (Lynn McTaggart) or “in the Zone” as athletes & artists would understand it.  The human brain has 2 hemispheres commonly known as the left & right hemispheres. The majority of the planet have done well to exhaust the left hemisphere with information, analytics and logic - after all we now have over 3000 books published daily (that excludes e-books). That’s a lot of information. The left hemisphere is the logical & analytical part of the brain. In the corporate world this way of working comes in the form of “Word” documents, excel spreadsheets and cell based software.

The highly creative right hemisphere is thankfully being explored more & more these days by the vast ideas and concepts we read about, see or purchase. “Orange County Choppers” proves the artistic genius is applicable to motorbikes, prompting many similar television programs showing men and woman getting highly creative to improve a car, truck, motor bike, home, restaurant, someone’s life, and so the list goes on.  This right hemisphere is also the empathetic & purpose driven area of the brain, so many of the television programs just mentioned, also have an empathetic theme. Bikes, cars & homes are all improved for someone in need. This right hemisphere of the brain is where Picasso hung-out, Sir Richard Branson too is a great example of an ideas man, purpose driven with a highly developed right brain. His business has grown into so many different areas of industry. As we see all around us many ideas have been developed into real businesses.

The “whole brain” working as one is optimal – when in this mode we we epiphanies, those award winning ideas and “wow” brain waves.  This is the state of mind where Leonardo Da Vinci, Michael Angelo and Albert Einstein all hung-out. Looking at nature with its diverse & abundant examples of creativeness, we know we are all capable of so much more if we, like nature – engage the whole brain thus enabling that broadband connection from our brains to that awesome energy of creation.

Once again the $1million question comes up – “How does one do that?”

One simple way to engage more of your mind is to Mind Map everyday as part of your routine. Mind Mapping is better described as visually integrating information synergistically. As you open up your emails, open up your Mind Mapping tool. The science supporting mind mapping says our brains are wired the way mind mapping works as a whole: in color, with key pictures or words, with an order & logic combined with randomness too. As so much of my time is spent on a computer I encourage the use of mind mapping software that uses today’s technologies and visually integrates information into one application. This allows you to work with information and color, analytics and creativity, producing spreadsheets and multidimensional maps of your thoughts or business processes. And it’s easy.  Just like your thoughts everything can be visually linked so all supporting documentation and hyperlinks are in one place. This is particularly useful if you are a project manager running large projects.  This application frees up your brain of wasted time thinking with only one hemisphere, by using a technology that encourages the whole brain to work as one. Our brains weren’t designed to think in lists alone – we taught ourselves to do this. Instead we have random thoughts sometimes popping into our minds from “nowhere” or rather from “now-here”. This technology allows our thoughts to be captured and added to a visual diagram in a logical colorful process thus keeping left & right hemispheres working as one. A picture tells 1000 words so we use pictures in our maps too. Working the way your brain is wired  improves productivity, gives you time back in your day and it builds the vital muscular connections between left & right hemispheres that will grow your mind into a stronger muscle capable of so much more. Think about it – you are using more of your mind more of the time – this will mean processing time is that much quicker, so what would you do if you could have time back in your day?

Simply put we’re going back to nature now and working with it, not against it. Getting back to the “What the Bleep” movie – whole brain thinking is plunging deep into “the Field” (Lynn McTaggart) of quantum physics and allowing yourself to soak up and explore the abundant possibilities that await us.

Now you can get creative about creating your day and begin to understand that creating thoughts can be fun, empowering and extremely powerful. Imagine changing a thought that could have had a negative feel to it, to a positively powerful jump-out-of-bed-thought. We all have the power to do so. When one builds these very physical connections between the brain’s hemispheres – more magic, more epiphanies and way more fun is invited into our lives. Mind map your daily processes at work, mind map at college & school and this will improve your brain power while giving you time back in your day to connect you to the awesome creative energy you behold. After all, thoughts are energy and this method of thinking has an exponential difference to your mind and thus to your world. This is a practical application and a first step for many into the world of the quantum mind, the Now, the Zone, the Field and all at a conscious level.  I hope to meet you there soon.

Work With Nature - The Power of Ducks

Posted by Lyndi in Deep Roots on October 25th, 2007 |  Comments Off

We encourage the use of mind maps in everyday business as it’s the way to work your brain - with nature, the way it was designed/wired. Below is a most amusing example of the power of working with nature. I recently read this glorious story on www.deliciouslivingmag.com and had to reference it as a great example of what we at Orange Tree encourage constantly. Working with nature is when wonderful surprises happen, epiphanies are born regularly and successes inevitable - just as the story below describes…

The power of ducks
October, 2007

(as told by Frederick Kirschenmann, Distinguished Fellow, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture (www.leopold.iastate.edu))“My favorite example of the shift to sustainable agriculture is Takao Furuno, a very imaginative young farmer in southern Japan. Until 1987, he was a conventional, industrial rice farmer. He was extremely successful by industrial standards; his yields were among the highest in southern Japan. But one day it occurred to him that every year, he had to put everything he earned from rice production into the next year’s crop. He didn’t want to do that anymore, so that was his motivation to come up with a new system.

What Furuno came up with was: If he were to marry the best wisdom from the past with the best science available today, could he come up with a whole new system?

He learned from the wisdom of the past that farmers in Japan used to have ducks in their rice paddies. So, he put a piece of plastic electric fence down the middle of his rice paddies, brought in some ducklings, and sat back to watch. He noticed the ducklings were eating the insects off the rice plants. Next he started to think, farmers from the past, in various parts of the country, used to have fish in their rice paddies. When farmers started to use insecticides to get rid of insects in order to increase their rice yields, it killed the fish so they couldn’t do fish anymore. Now, he’s wondering, because he’s not using insecticide anymore, could he introduce fish back into the paddies? That would be another commodity that he could harvest.

All the experts told him, ‘You have to make a choice, because if you put those little fish into the water and then you put the ducklings in, they’ll dive down and eat the fish.’ So, he got himself a tub of water and put these little fish in, put the ducklings in, and sat back to watch. Sure enough, the ducklings dove down to eat the fish. He got to thinking that the rice paddies were a little different, because in rice paddies the water is cloudy, so would the ducks behave the same way in cloudy water? So he got a few handfuls of soil and put it into the tub of water, stirred it up to get it all cloudy, put the fish back in, put the ducklings back in—and the ducklings didn’t eat the fish anymore. So then he started to experiment in the rice paddies again and found that the fish and the ducklings were quite compatible in a rice-paddy setting.

Then he began to notice something else: There’s a weed that grows in the rice paddies, called a zola. It’s a fern-like plant that grows on the surface of the water like a water lily, and it subdivides—you have two, then four, then eight—and by the time the rice paddies get half-covered, in a matter of days, they choke the rice plants. So farmers routinely kill off the zola plant with an herbicide. In Furuno’s rice paddies, both ducks and fish feed on the zola plant, so they keep it from spreading.

Then he discovered that the zola plant has a unique relationship with bacteria—it actually produces nitrogen in the water. Given the nitrogen from the zola, plus the droppings from the ducks and the fish, he has all the fertility he needs so he doesn’t need to buy fertilizer anymore. That’s more money he can keep in his pocket.

Now, he’s not just producing rice, but he’s producing rice, plus duck meat, plus duck eggs, plus fish meat, and because he’s not using pesticides, he can grow fruit on the peripheral of his rice paddies, the way the ancient farmers used to do, so he’s also producing fruit off of that same acreage. After having this new system in place for several years, he also discovered that the root crown of his rice plants was about twice the size as with the old industrial system. With a larger root crown, you get more rice. He’s not even sure why that’s happening, something about the synergy of the system he’s creating. So his rice yields have also increased by 20 to 50 percent.

That, to me, is a model of the future of agriculture. Here is a system based on agro-ecological principles and biological synergies—how they feed on one another without a lot of energy input and increase productivity at the same time. In resource-poor areas of the world, if we give farmers a little bit of capital so that they can buy their original seed stock—and they have access to the land—I believe that with this increased productivity, we can begin to address the issue of hunger in the developing world.”

Feng Shui your thoughts using a Mind Map.

Posted by Lyndi in Branches of Thought on June 13th, 2007 |  Comments Off

Marie Diamond Los Angeles 2006.JPGPhotograph: Lyndi Kim Leggett & Marie Diamond (2006)

Having met with Marie Diamond socially on a few occasions, it’s became apparent to me that the art in Feng Shui works the same way as a mind map.

Marie has shared several examples of the work she’d done – one example is of course told about in the Secret Movie, and learning from this incredible lady I realized that as energy in different areas of our living environment make a fundamental difference to the lives & goals so does the way in which we organize our thoughts. It’s all energy after all.

The briefest description of Feng Shui would have you become aware of these areas in your environment - that correspond to areas in your life i.e. wealth, health and relationships. A map is starting to form of your home and thus a mind map springs to mind immediately. It’s ordering energy in your home. As thoughts are energy too it makes sense to draw the similarity that a mind map of your thoughts/work/projects is the same as ensuring the right energy in the appropriate areas in your home. To elaborate let’s Feng Shui your home – imagine you have had some time with Marie or watched her Feng Shui Essentials DVD’s and now you’re aware of the areas in your life corresponding to areas in your home. Let’s use the wealth area of your home (for example) and let’s remove an item that perhaps indicated “lack”. You would prefer “abundance of wealth” so you removed the item associated to “lack” and two days later a rather lovely check arrived in the mail. Co-incidence some may say, others would know that energy of like attracts like – Law of Attraction states this clearly.

So what if your thoughts were like your home and you had a way to group like with like and thus able to “attract” what you desire into you life. Perhaps you would Feng Shui your thoughts with a mind map, grouping and branching thoughts and ideas into a colorful visual display of what’s on your mind and what you want in your life. The next day you may find that check arrives in the post because you have been prompted into an action you might otherwise have forgotten. This is just an example.

Mind mapping my goals was the first mind map I ever created – sorting out the different areas of my life and deciding on what my goals were for each of these areas then adding pictures of these outcomes. A picture tells 1000 words so there must be pictures. This is such a powerful tool – many have “dream boards” – I use a mind map and of course they work as well as dream boards do.

Now consider the consequences of mind mapping a work related project and the outcomes too – law of attraction says like attracts like so now using a mind map you have a way of capturing your thoughts, plans, projects and the outcomes. This is Feng Shui at work – this is Feng Shui-ing your working thoughts and your dreaming thoughts into one map. Ensure your goals for the day or week or month by understanding this simple process. Did you know there is a part of your brain responsible for this job of seeking outcomes of powerful thoughts. Its called the reticular activating system (RAS) and it does what its told to every day. Just ensure all the same thoughts are grouped accordingly by Feng Shui-ing your mind using a mind map. This is extremely powerful.
